The OSU Alumni Club of West Michigan – 2018-2019 Officers and Board of Directors


President  - Dan LaVille – Endowed Scholarship Fund

Dan graduated from The OSU College of Social Work in 1973.  He met his MSU wife while they both attended the University of Notre Dame Law School. Dan has worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, in the private practice of law, and as an Adult Probation & Parole Officer for the Ohio Adult Parole Authority.  Dan has been the Clerk of the Court for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Western District of Michigan since 1999.  He is also past president of multiple organizations including the St. Stephen Church Parish Council and Athletic Association and Serra Club of Grand Rapids and is a member of the Advisory Board of St. Ann's Home in Grand Rapids. He is a Life Member of The OSU President’s Club and is one of the “founding” members of The OSU Alumni Club of West Michigan, as well as the Club’s Endowed Scholarship Fund and a previous, now current, Alumni Club President.  Dan still enjoys working on the College Fairs and Scholarship Committees. 


Vice President – Sonny Gordon – Spring Dinner / Golf Outing

Sonny attended The Ohio State University from 1983-1986. He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Management from The University of Phoenix. While at Ohio State, he played football and was a three year starter and one of the Captains in 1986. During his tenure, he played in 4 Bowl Games: the Fiesta Bowl, Rose Bowl, Citrus Bowl and Cotton Bowl. Earle Bruce was his Coach for 4 years. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals and played a year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also played three years in the Canadian Football League and had the opportunity to play in the 1989 Grey Cup.  He joined The OSU Alumni Club of West Michigan in 2008 and joined the Board of Directors in 2009. He currently works for United States Seats Company (USSC) located in Exton Pa. He is the Midwest Regional Sales Manager for USSC.  He met his wife, Angie, at OSU and they have resided in Michigan since 2000.


Secretary - M. Rosita Schiller, RSM, PhD – Special Events / Nominating Committee

Sister Rosita received her PhD in Human Nutrition from Ohio State in 1972. During her career she served as a hospital dietitian for six years and taught nutrition and dietetics at Mercy College of Detroit for 10 years. In 1978 she was selected as Director of the Medical Dietetics Division at Ohio State, a position that she held for 25 years. Upon retirement from OSU in 2003, she moved back to West Michigan to be closer to family. She works part time at Saint Mary’s Foundation and serves on numerous hospital committees. She joined the OSU Club’s Board in 2004, chaired the Jim Crowe Museum Exhibit and enjoys meeting new friends, and participating in a variety of Club activities.


Treasurer - Jim Jarvis

Jim was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He made the journey to Columbus to become a graduate of the 2002 Ohio State class with a Bachelor of Science in Economics with a minor in Marketing. While attending The Ohio State University, he was an active member of the OSU Club Lacrosse team in which he was Treasurer and Head Coach and guided the team to an NCLL National Championship victory. Currently, Jim is a Financial Consultant with Fidelity Investments in Grand Rapids. He joined The OSU Alumni Club of West Michigan in 2009 and volunteered for the Board of Directors as Treasurer in 2014.


Shane Gontarz – Young Bucks

Shane graduated from Ohio State in 2014 with a B.S. in Business Administration (Specialization in Sales/Marketing). Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Shane grew up bleeding Scarlet and Gray. Not to mention that the majority of Shane`s immediate family have attended the university. Prior to moving to Grand Rapids, Shane was the proprietor of a tattoo parlour and art gallery, Ink and Iron in Toledo, OH. Shane currently works for a West Michigan tech firm, Next I.T., as a CIO/Business Technology Advisor. Shane enjoys co-chairing the Young Bucks committee as is excited to continue introducing and creating relationships with local young buckeyes in West Michigan and those that are young at heart.


Linda Goossen – Scholarship Interviews & Selection  

Linda Graduated from OSU in 1971 with a B.S in Biology, and a teaching certificate for grades 7-12 Biology.  She moved to Grand Rapids that summer to complete a one-year internship in Medical Technology, and became a certified Medical Technologist in 1972.  Linda went on to earn a Master of Health Science degree from GVSU and a Ph.D. in Science Education from WMU.  She retired in 2016, after 31 years at GVSU, as Professor of Medical Laboratory Science and Associate Dean in the College of Health Professions.  With retirement, Linda hopes hope to have a more time available to attend the OSU West MI activities, is looking forward to serving on the Board and volunteering on various projects.


Carolyn Hummel – Scholarship Interviews & Selection / College Fairs

Carolyn graduated from Ohio State in 1970 with a B.S. in Home Economics Education. A long- time member of The OSU Alumni Club of West Michigan, she joined the Club’s Board of Directors in 2009 after retiring as the Fremont Middle School Principal. Carolyn enjoyed sharing her enthusiasm for The Ohio State University with her students and convincing many to become Buckeye fans! She currently chairs the Club’s Scholarship Committee, volunteers at College Fairs and is on The OSU College of Education and Home Ecology’s Alumni Board of Governors in Columbus.





Kristy Kieda - Social Media / Volunteer Opportunities     

Kristy graduated from The Ohio State University with a B.A. in Political Science in 2007. After moving back to her home state of Michigan, she attended Cornerstone University and graduated summa cum laude with a Master’s of Business Administration focused on International Business. She currently works as a Project Manager in the healthcare industry, serves with several charities, and joined The OSU Alumni Club of West Michigan’s Board in 2008.  Kristy enjoys helping to manage the Club’s social media, the Buckeye Book Community, as well as planning networking and volunteer opportunities for the Club.


Ken Marotte – Special Events / Young Bucks  

Ken earned his M.A. in East Asian Studies from The Ohio State University, where he specialized in history and political science, and received the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship.  With this expertise, he now teaches Asian history classes at Aquinas College and is chairman of Grand Rapids' Sister Cities committee for Omihachiman, Japan. He also serves as senior writer and managing director at A.C. Fitzgerald & Associates, a nonprofit consulting firm.  He and his family reside in Grand Rapids. 


Rob Stefanowski – Website / Ticket Exchange

Rob earned his B.S. in Computer Information systems in 1981.  While at Ohio State he worked in the athletic facilities.  Upon graduation, he returned to Michigan and began to pursue his teaching certification.  He earned his certification in 1991 and moved to West Michigan.  He taught 2 years in Wyoming and has been in the Forest Hills District for the last 24 years.  He has worked at Central Middle, Central High, and he is currently teaching Math at Eastern Middle. Rob has enjoyed hosting our Club’s Website for many years.


Karen Stockdale – Game Watches / Beat Xichigan BASH / Nominating Committee

Karen moved with her husband Gary and family from Columbus to Grand Rapids in 1992. Although she didn't attend OSU, she and her family are huge fans. They were thrilled to find the Buckeye Alumni Club and a place to watch the games with other Buckeye fans. They joined the Club in 2006 and Karen is now a Game Watch Co-Chair.  Karen was President of the Wyoming Athletic Boosters for 12 years. She enjoys bowling and golfing and is currently employed at Rockford Construction. 


Barry Waters –Game Watches / Beat Xichigan BASH

Barry graduated from Ohio State in 1978 with a BS Degree in Business Administration.  An Accounting major in college, Barry is a CPA and CFO whose career has included experience in various accounting and financial management positions from Atlanta, back to Ohio, New Jersey, Florida and Grand Rapids. Barry met his wife, Donna, during his second year at Ohio State.  They have two daughters (Saint Mary’s College 2006 and OSU 2012), a Badger son-in-law and have lived in West Michigan since 1997.  Barry has been involved with the Club’s game watches, Golf Outing and Beat Xichigan Bash since the inception of those events. 


Donna Waters – Membership / Group Tickets

Donna is a 1978 OSU Dental Hygiene Graduate with a BS Degree in Education.  She and husband, Barry, both from the Cleveland, OH area, met at OSU at Papa Joes and they have lived in OH, GA, NJ, FL and now MI for over 21 years.  She joined The OSU Club’s Board of Directors in 2003 as President after The National Championship Season (without ever attending a Club Meeting – so, YOU too, are welcome to get involved)!  Donna LOVES meeting new Buckeye Grads and Fans and expanding our Fan Base here in TSUN J  - thus, after stepping down from 13 years as Club President, she still heads up the Membership Committee.  She recently “quit-tired” from 40 years as a Dental Hygienist  & certainly enjoyed  being on the winning side of a lot of dental office fun with her MSU and U of M co-workers!


Shayla Willis – College Fairs

Shayla Willis is a Grand Rapids native and Grand Rapids Public School graduate. She graduated in 2012 from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Social Work and from Purdue University with a Master of Educational Leadership and Administration and is currently working on her PhD.  Shayla now serves as the T2C Studio Coordinator which is the place-based response established by the To College, Through College Initiative, facilitated by Our Community’s Children, a public/private partnership between the City of Grand Rapids and Grand Rapids Public Schools. Shayla is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and likes to spend her spare time attending events around the City of Grand Rapids with friends and family and traveling.


John Worthington – Golf Outing

John graduated from Ohio State in 1991 with a major in accounting.  John’s family has a long history of Ohio State graduates.  His great grandfather graduated from OSU College of Dentistry in 1901.  John has worked in the financial service industry since graduation from OSU.  He and his wife Rebecca (A Hawkeye fan) moved to Detroit, Michigan in 2008 where John assumed the role of Chief Financial Officer of Fifth Third Bank Eastern Michigan.  In 2015 he moved across state to Grand Rapids and become the CFO of National Mortgage Company.  He and his wife have two daughters, Catherine and Elizabeth.  After realizing he could enjoy OSU victories with other Buckeye fans, John decided to join the OSU West MI Club.






Lisa Baber –  Honorary Board Member

Lisa is a 1993 graduate of Washington and Jefferson College with Degree in Political Science and History and attended University of Denver for her MA in International Studies.  Originally from Cleveland OH, she developed her love for all things OSU.  After time in PA, CO, and AZ, she returned to Columbus Ohio before moving to Grand Rapids in 2009.  While looking for a place to watch Buckeye Football, she stumbled upon The OSU Alumni Club of West Michigan and the rest is history with many years served on the Board, until just recently moving back to   O-H-I-O and is now working for Jo-Ann Fabrics.


Dr. Don Williams – Honorary Board Member

Don earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry at OSU in 1964. He ended his formal teaching of Chemistry and Philosophy at Hope College in Holland, Michigan in 2002 after 40 years.  He speaks and writes on behalf of civilian nuclear power, often in high schools and "senior" learning centers. He once chaired Michigan's Commission to isolate the state's low level radioactive waste.  Don has won communication and service awards.  A Board Member of The OSU Alumni Club of West Michigan for nearly a decade, he has helped with the Scholarship and Public Service Committees.  His wife of 60 years, Sue, is a native Ohioan and a social worker.
